Description

Gothic/Doom, Undefinable

Milanese band Monumentum were formed in the late 1980s by guitarist Roberto Mammarella and bassist Anthony Duman, working in a framework that combined Italian darkwave with slow Gothic Rock and elements of Christian Death deathrock. On the earliest releases, particularly, that mix resulted in a strong Gothic/Doom, and occasionally even outright Death/Doom, feel. In similar fashion to Canaan, also from Milan, it would be a stretch to describe that as deserving a conclusively Doom tag; nonetheless, both bands have flirted with Doom themselves, and run labels that handle Doom releases, making them at least worthy of honourable mention.
