Quick introductory interview.

Interview with Unus Mundus.
1. Who are you and how did the band get started?

We’re Unus Mundus, a heavy rock band (sludge metal, psychedelic, blues, space rock, whatever...) from the State of Georgia, U.S.A. There are three of us: Steve Fitzpatrick, Rob Fluhr and Josh Massey. Two of us live in Atlanta and one lives in Athens. I founded the band in 2001, as a one-man project. He also found out, quickly, that playing heavy music with other people was more satisfying than rocking out by himself!

2. Why did you choose Doom, and how would you describe your style?

Doom choose us! You’ve seen that before I bet! But maybe it was also the all-encompassing draw of entropy and reality itself that caused us to become this filthy and sweaty... And those long Georgia nights are very filthy and sweaty. Since sludge is “defined” as a combination of metal, blues and punk informed by listening to crap loads of Black Sabbath the term sludge seems to make sense for us. We’re pretty damned spacey & weird too. Since we’ve all worked with blues, punk, space rock and industrial styles (and lifestyles) the following terms could apply: “doom-metal blues” and “industrial space-sludge”!

3. What would you consider to be the high point of your career so far?

Recording an absolutely kick-ass album called “Staring at the Sun” at Tom Ashton’s studio, SubVon, in Winterville, Georgia! Tom helped us make a damned good album, now available online, internationally.

4. Which three bands most influenced you?

Hard to pare it down to just three bands (or anything) but I’ll try... These ones I guess: Black Sabbath, Black Flag and Hawkwind.

5. What are your plans for the near future?

Recording an EP-length album with Tom Ashton sometime in mid-2019. We’re also wanting to start playing live again in 2019.

6. If there is anything you would like to add, the last words are yours.

Unus Mundus. Industrial-strength space sludge. Doom metal blues. Making the blues weird again! One world: but not the one you expect! One world of beauty and savagery! Of blood in the chicken nachos! Of tyranny and justice! Of a beer truck that wrecked on a cracked interstate! Of disappointment and triumph! Of empty streets smelling like vomit, beer and acid! Of endless possibilities! Of a sputtering streetlamp next to a passed out drunk sleeping in his own piss! Of an oddly inviting hole in a massive ruined building on the edge of some dark Southern woods.
