Quick introductory interview. |
1. Who are you and how did the band get started?
My name is Steve Cefala. I founded the blackened doom metal band Dawning back in 1996. Bud Burke co-founded the band along with me . We were seniors in high school at the time. Bud and I had previously jammed together in Pale Existence, which was another san jose based death black thrash doom band. Dawning put out 4 demos , which were mostly distributed through trades in the underground in cassette dubs, and also thanks to KFJC 89.7 foothill college radio , which played them for years. Bud Burke has moved on and is now playing guitar in Exhumed. 2. Why did you choose Doom, and how would you describe your style? Dawning is the most pure hybrid of black metal and doom ever . there is also a hint of ambient ( wind chimes, backwards whispers) cinematic new age ( like Valngelis type) its not a doom part here - a back metal part there --- its black metal and doom overlapped at the same time. and the entire songs are mostly written on my Roland JV keyboards is largely responsible for the cinematic psychedelic feel. 3. What would you consider to be the high point of your career so far? Our live in KFJC 89.7 radio performance back in 1997 was probably our high point so far. Chiyo from Noothegrush had her own radio show on there and let us perform on there and we just nailed it . It was our most epic performance yet. 4. Which three bands most influenced you? Winter, Grief, Darkthrone 5. What are your plans for the near future? We have a record split coming out from Preposterous Creations http://preposterouscreations.com/ a small French label. The song featured on it is a 12 minute long epic black/doom song titled THE DIVINE ARRIVAL OF THE MASSIVE HOOF. It is a new arrangement of our old classic , which has been featured in "the rules of metal". We also have a full length audio cassette coming out on that same label fairly soon thereafter . Most of the band's focus is on writing and recording. Hard to find creative band-members who are not scensters. and the local scene's emphasis on "being metal" and "acting nihilistic" is lame and annoying... 6. If there is anything you would like to add, the last words are yours. Heres's a link to a new Dawning track I posted on Youtube, called Ode to Emperor Julian I want to thank Noothegrush, DJ Bassnectar, Freematik (sound engineer) and Preposterous Creations for their support and inspiration.
