|
|
I'm playing in a deathblackdoomwhatevermetalband, recently shifting more to doom/stoner with bits of postrock and death/black metal (does this matter ).
Anyway, I own an Epiphone SG (tuned in B) and a BC Rich Mockingbird (tuned in E). As our new stuff is all in B and I don't think we will play in E anymore, my BC Rich has become a bit useless (the thing can't handle the B tuning...), although I really like playing it eventhough it's a very heavy guitar. The neck is just perfect and that's something I miss in the SG.
Now I'm looking for a guitar that has a very comfortable neck, a warm sound, the light weight of my SG, no tremelo, and a guitar that can handle low tuning. I'm not interested in 7-string guitars or baritone guitars (being a tiny woman with tiny fingers ).
Tomorrow, I'm gonna check out some guitars like Gibson SG and Les Paul, Ibanez, ESP, ...
My question is, with a budget of around € 1000, what other guitars can you guys recommend that are worth checking out. I know I have to make the decision myself, but maybe there are guitars I didn't even know the existence of... _________________ www.aetherium.be

| there should be plenty of good guitars available in that price range. Are you thinking of buying new or waiting around for a deal on used gear? |

According to our bass player, guitars with tremelo aren't very suitable for low tuning and a fix bridge is better. My Mockingbird has a tremelo and is also way too heavy for me to be comfortable.
Anyway, went out and try some guitars today. It seemed like it was going to be an SG, but then tried an Ibanez FR 1620 BK Prestige and was really impressed. Felt good and had a warm sound. So I'm going to think about it really good... _________________ www.aetherium.be

Doesn't really matter if it's new or used. In the first place I'm looking for a guitar that is really comfortable to play and with a good sound. _________________ www.aetherium.be

Lock the trem in the BC Rich, sorted. It is just a case of carving a wedge to go either side of it. In fact, I have done it on a BC rich very recently, I'll sort a pic in a sec. Here's the front:
You'll probably need to leave one spring in to complete the earth path. Is it actually weight that is the issue, or just the weird shape and balance. If you have a guitar you like the feel of, hell of a lot easier to sort the sound with tinkering than to make a good sounding one a different shape. My Mockingbid bass has the strap button shifted to the end of the neck heel to help the balance. _________________ Order my damn record:

Well, I think it's more the weight than the balance and the shape. It's a very comfortable guitar actually, for about 20 minutes...Have tried a Les Paul, which is also very heavy, but that's nothing for me with the neck being too thick. _________________ www.aetherium.be

The other thing to do is whip the neck off and mate it with another body. Other BC Richs of the same series are probably compatible. Is it 24 fret? What series? I know a BC Rich expert who can probably tell me ever model with equivalent neck profile. For that sort of money, you could have a luthier craft a whole new body, or chamber the one you have. Replacing the trem with a hard tail will also shed some weight.
I dunno much about slim neck guitars, all my guitarists have favoured chunky ones, but I know finding a neck you are really comfortable with is a precious thing. _________________ Order my damn record:

Have you thought about trying a 7 string or a baritone?
Also, have you tried switching over to a heavier string gauge, like .072 - .0113?
You may also want to stay away from anything w/ a basswood body as well. |

| BC Rich makes import Mockingbirds with stop tails. They are really nice. I'd try that out if you want a similar neck to the one you like. Is your's a ST Mockingbird or an NJ? |
