Sßwol : Demo 2007

SÓwol is an Atmospheric Doom band from Finland led by two men: Pekka Taina (vocals, guitar, bass and texts) and Jussi Verkonnen (drums). The demo offers three songs and lasts 17 minutes.

Originality is a pointless, and inevitably a subjective, concept. Is it necessary to be original to generate interest? Can’t one be satisfied with an overall quality, be it standard? And what constitutes originality? In terms of music, being part of a genre automatically means renouncing a singularity. It is accepting codes, adopting forms tested by others, the “almighty” precursors-inventors.

This little introduction is aimed to give SÓwol a chance because if SÓwol is not original, it is good. I found traces of bands like Syrach, Frailty or Keen Of The Crow in their music, therefore necessarily traces of Anathema, Katatonia and My Dying Bride.

Really, everything is in its place; the grunts are good, raw and aggressive, the melodies are effective and the production is clear. But you have heard that a hundred times. One must not regret it: the work is excellent. The disc offers its quota of heaviness, atmosphere and darkness. If the three tracks are interesting, the second, 'Lethal State', stands out: the words, although simple, are catchy and there is a progressive and emotional feeling in the guitar play that I like very much. A real flaw is to be noticed, however: the three tracks look like they have been extracted from longer songs. I sort of have the impression that they end strangely abruptly and that they could last 1 or 2 minutes more. SÓwol is a project to be followed anyway.
