Akelei : Promo '08 (Demo)

This very good promo by the Dutch Doom band Akelei caught me by surprise. It is a refreshing take on Atmospheric Doom – or dare I say, Atmospheric Metal in general.

Although the sound quality is a bit low-fi, there is plenty of opportunity for this band to display their talents here. The floating guitar lines and the warm, reverberating vocals of singer Misha bring to mind the colossal debut albums of Finish deities of Atmospheric Rock/Metal Decoryah and This Empty Flow. The music is calm, serene and easy flowing, and yet one cannot help wondering how a professional production would have transformed the sound on this promo; I can hear the potential for a crushing wall of guitars akin to that of Officium Triste here!

The melodic, mesmerizing guitar sound and calm vocals make this a wonderful album to dream away with and I think that except of fans of melodic Doom, there is potential here to attract people from very diverse musical genres, such as Shoegaze, Guitar Rock and Post Rock. In the meantime, I dedicate this promo to all fans of Atmospheric Metal and wait with anticipation for the band’s next step.
