Solarized : Driven

Ah, first times: memories, memories. First sex, first drugs, and yes, first rock n' roll. My first stoner concert was seeing Tummler, Solarized, and Alabama Thunder Pussy in St. Louis, Missouri almost 2 years ago. And that's all it took. Two years later my finances are a disaster, but my CD collection is kicking ass like it never did before. And it's all Solarized's fault!

I first became aware of Solarized from 1998's wonderful 'Jersey Devils' split with Solace on MeteorCity/Freebird. This was followed by 'Neanderthal Speedway' on Man's Ruin in 1999, reportedly one of MR's consistently best-selling titles.

'Driven' features cover art by groupmeister Jim Hogan of a muscle car spinning out of the desert with a post-apocalyptic city skyline in the background, and I can't imagine a better clue for the music within. 'Intro'/'Dig the Ride' starts things off with a serious ass-kicking, driven by Reg Satana's propulsive drumming. What follows are unrelentingly heavy early '70s-inspired grooves, enhanced by new members Mike Fiore on bass and Dave "Furious" Topolenski (ex-Drag Pack) on guitar.

There is an unexpected cover of 'Stab Your Back' by late-70s UK punkers The Damned, but the rest of the album is remarkably consistent in that it was written entirely and sung by Hogan in his unmistakable southern-friend voice.

There's no doubt that Solarized has come up with a worthy successor to their first discs; if you love heavy grooves, fantastic guitar leads, and intelligent yet stoned-out vocals, put this one at the top of your Christmas list.
