Within Tears : Moments Of Life Chapter 1

The US doom-metal underground scene is alive; with greedy eyes, I welcome another unknown but promising band which arises from obscurity after the crushing Hierophant. Within Tears represents the completely other side of the doom-metal spectrum; what we have here, is a continuation of the European, romantic doom death metal tradition in the vein of the three Peaceville giants (and especially My Dying Bride). However, Within Tears is certainly not a clone of the 'Bride.

The atmospheric, melancholic piano based keyboards that are used here, are certainly a pluspoint for this band. Apparently, the band members come from a hardcore background. This becomes clear especially when some raw, brutal grunts which are difficult to reconciliate with the tranquil, melancholic music at first, enter the scene. Fortunately, when the grunts enter, they are accompanied by some heavy guitar work, while the melodic, atmospheric piano/keyboard parts are mainly used together with whispering vocals or low, moaning clean male voice (with some occational female vocals as well).

The sound of Within Tears is mainly based on those atmospheric parts while the heavier parts bring more body and power to the compositions. This combination works quite well in the tracks 'Alone' (with its heavy, though catchy basic guitar riff) and 'Empty' (a long melancholic piano and lead guitar based song which is interrupted by a heavy outburst somewhere in the middle, until the piano/lead combination returns). In short, Within Tears can be seen as another band to be counted on when it comes to the softer, relaxing side of doom-metal. Especially fans of bands like Novembers Doom, On Thorns I Lay and Cryptal Darkness should remember this name and give this band a chance.
