Hangnail : Hangnail/Pandemonium Diabolico Split

Album CoverAlbum Cover

Pandemonium Diabolico is Sloth under a different moniker. Why? Well, when the band decided to do a second split with Hangnail they also decided that they weren't too keen on the idea of having two releases named 'Hangnail/Sloth Split'. (I can see why as Sloth's two splits with Angry Hate are easy to mix up, and even then one is a 7" and the other a 12" which gives you something to hold on to.) Therefore they temporarily renamed the band. I'm guessing that it is for the same reason that this split has often been overlooked in discographies listing Sloth's releases; in turn it has become one of their most obscure releases.

Hangnail churn out one pissed off hard-/grindcore track after another, the average of which lasts about a minute. Not much to explain if you've heard them before as their songs don't really have any variation outside the lyrics and the occational sample attached to the track. Being that that is all the variation there is I find it a good thing that they print the lyrics on all their releases. (Well, they do on those I own at least.)

The Sloth-in-disguise side contains one track with a heck of a long name if you include all the parts and part-parts. However, I can't see how any of the part (or part-part) titles have anything to do with the music. The 'FUNERAL HOUSE OF THE DEAD...' part of the title I can understand as this is a slow funeral doom track with distorted, mumbling growls. The riff is identical to '"at war with existence"', their track from the 'Sloth/Disreantiyouthhellchristbastardassmanx Split'. Actually, the two tracks are as close to identical as you get. However, I somehow fancy that style, and since this track is nearly one and a half minute longer I think I prefer the track on this split.

In all my years on eBay I've only encountered this split once. It didn't fetch much of a price (perhaps because it is so unknown?), certainly not as much as it is worth. Even so, I'd readily recommend Sloth fans to get hold of this split, unless of course you do not already have the one with Disreantiyouthhellchristbastardassmanx but encounter this one first. As a bonus to whoever ends up with a copy of this split you'll get a drawn anime-ish image of a bikini lady with a severed head in one hand. Not to mention all the disturbing/weird Japanese images you always get with a Hibachi release.
