Thou : Summit

Thou keep on exploring new soundscapes and making their sound more complex.

Wow, what a fantastic and unbelievable album. ‘Summit’ by Thou is unlike anything I have ever heard. My initial thought was 'what the hell is this?', but after further listens I figured out what a fantastic band this is. It sounds like Eyehategod taken to another dimension. There is so much going on in this one disc that you really have to listen to it again and again to really hear every detail.

This is NOT your typical doom/sludge record. It has some elements of Black Metal bands like Gorgoroth and as such it's a slow and dark LP. Thou is definitely a band that sounds like no one else. The instruments are used almost like a symphony to construct this extremely intense collection of blasphemic tracks.

The first track ‘Be Endurance We Conquer’ has this nice little - almost pretty - sounding guitar intro and then come the drums and everything kick you in the face; the vocals attack you and leave you with your mouth wide open. It is truly one of the loudest Doom album and one of the sludgiest sound I have ever heard! I can’t make out all of the words that are sung, but I do sense a strong feeling of alienation and despair throughout the entire record. The mood and atmosphere this band permeates seems to include strong feelings of isolation, anguish, pain, hopelessness, and something extremely dark. You could say this is a very melancholic kind of a feeling.

The strongest tracks are ‘Be Endurance We Conquer', ‘Prometheus’ and ‘Another World Is Inevitable’. Alone in a dark room with rain pouring down outside your window and flashes of lightning streaking across the sky, listening to this would be almost like a religious experience.

The only complaints I have is the fact that the speed doesn’t vary as much as maybe it should. However, the production job is incredible. The sound jumps at you and has little hidden passages that are unheard if you are not listening closely. The mood of it is extremely powerful, almost sinister.

‘Summit’ has grown a lot on me and crawled under my skin. This is most definitely one of the most original bands I have ever heard within the Doom Metal genre. Cross Eyehategod and Gorgoroth and that is pretty much the only way I can describe the sound of Thou. I have never heard anything like this, giving me the chills like it did. It’s definitely a must for any Doom Metal fan looking for something different. The weak points are minor and this album is just extraordinary, one of the best of 2010.
