Caronte : Yoni

Caronte handle the Italian Dark Sound occult Doom vibe with practised ease on this latest full-length.

Caronte is the Italian word for Charon, the ferryman who, according to the Greek mythology, carries the souls of the dead across the river Acheron guiding them from the world of the living to the world of the dead...which is a proper name for an occult Doom metal band as well! 'Yoni', apart from a Sanskrit word with a metaphysical meaning (look it up!) is the third full length release for Caronte, a band who has also released two lengthy EPs and two splits, all of this in an 8 year span. Not bad at all!

I have to say that their take on occult Doom metal is refreshing. This album, 'Yoni', has character, songs are well-developed and the album as a whole addresses both soul and mind. This album is unquestionably characterised as Occult Doom, therefore it is not meant to be breaking new ground but it is coherent, melodic, atmospheric, and flows excellently from start to finish. It does have originality, mainly due to its rather distinct vocals and to its softer instrumental sections. The lead vocals have an eerie quality and are supported by some great backing vocals, often as a shamanic-meditative type psalm, for example in the opening track Abraxas. The lyrics are metaphysical, full of symbolisms.

The production is excellent, clear and natural sounding and has character. In a nutshell, these Italians know how to Doom and offer a refreshing take on the Occult. So, if the Psychedelic metaphysical cosmos is your thing, you will definitely enjoy this release!
