Quick introductory interview.

Interview with Gula.
1. Who are you and how did the band get started?

We are Gula from Rotterdam (Netherlands), consisting of Ilja Fase on bass and vocals, Jan Bleijenberg on guitar/keys/vocals, Pieter Dirksen on semi modulair synth and Aad Oliehoek on drums. Jan and Ilja formed Gula in 2015. Aad joined in 2016 (he had played with Jan and Ilja in a previous band). Ilja met Pieter at a concert. He joined in 2018 when we recorded our album.

2. Why did you choose Doom, and how would you describe your style?

Doom is one of the important ingredients of our songs among psychedelic/space/kraut/prog components. Also we draw from African rhythms; bass player and guitarist have been playing together in an African percussion group for some time. One could characterize most of our songs as "Doomy" because of the dark athmosphere, slow and threathening parts and haunting lyrics. Doom is not so much a style we choose... through jamming we just end up with parts of doom.

3. What would you consider to be the high point of your career so far?

Recording our debut album. We recorded most of it live, on one single day. It was quite an experience. Some of us had been in a studio before, but not like this. The analog recording, analog mixing and analog mastering was done by Chris van Velde, LGM Studio Rotterdam.

4. Which three bands most influenced you?

A lot of different bands inspire us and we find it extremely difficult to mention only three that appeals the most to all of us or that have influenced us the most. Some of our favourite Doom bands are: Dark Buddha Rising, Ufomammut, Om and My Dying Bride.

5. What are your plans for the near future?

We are currently working on songs for the next album. We'd love to play some live shows. Most of all, we’re having fun making music and hanging out together. Nobody knows what the future will bring, we prefer to live in the now .

6. If there is anything you would like to add, the last words are yours.

We are looking forward to the Roadburn festival next week... See you there, maybe!
