World Below : Repulsion

Swedish epic/traditional doomsters World Below have one monumental masterpiece on their hands with 'Repulsion', the band's third release overall and latest for label psycheDoomelic. The band specializes in epic melodic doom with nods to Black Sabbath ('Monsters in the Closet'), Candlemass ('The Old Ones') and Cathedral ('Gilgamesh'). There are also hints of Ozzy Osbourne's early solo work with Randy Rhodes on albums like 'Blizzard of Oz' and 'Diary of a Madman'. Though World Below's sound is often derivative it never lacks inventiveness or originality.

One of the most noticeable aspects of World Below's music is the clean, melodic vocals of singer/bassist Mikael Danielsson. Danielsson's singing is powerful and confident, and his voice is often times a dead ringer for Ozzy Osbourne in his prime. Guitarist Jonas Kjellgren's playing is also front and center, shifting seamlessly between crushing riffs, shredding solos, and beautiful acoustic passages. Kjellgren's songwriting ability is top notch as well, mixing multiple changes in melody and tempo throughout the band's material.

'Repulsion's standout out track is the nearly 20 minute closer and aptly titled 'Monument'. The song's folk based intro is reminiscent of 'Pagan Altar' but from then on it's a progressive journey of epic proportions as the song twists and turns through crushing, groove-laden riffs, grand soundscapes, wilting melodies and haunting, dark lyrical content. 'Monument' is a solid cornerstone to a an album of mammoth proportions.

For any fan of traditional doom, this album is a must have. 'Repulsion' is a tight, cohesive, slab of epic/traditional doom.
