Wormfood : Wormfood

Whilst not quite as psychotic, Wormfood have delivered to us doom-metal's answer to Mr.Bungle. You know you are in for a very strange album when it opens with a track filled with the sounds of a theme park or circus, with people screaming in terror and this insane maniacal laughing and yelling all over the top of it all. At this point I was doubting whether this would even be a doom-metal album, fortunately the next track quickly changed my mind...

Aside from all the strange little breaks from the thick and deafening doom metal that comes screaming full force out of the speakers for the short half an hour of this release, Wormfood play some pretty good death/doom metal that sounds vaguely similar to many other bands, at times losing its identity. That said, the oddities really turn this album into something else, as the doom is interrupted by strange carnival themes and announcements by the circus ringmaster, almost industrial sections and strange as it sounds, the theme from Inspector Gadget at the beginning of track five! I find myself returning time after time to this release over the last few days, which is starting to make me become addicted to this disc. I'm starting to really enjoy the way the tracks build into insane screaming and ranting and things, really just spiraling out of control. The vocals on this album jump all over the place, from really impressive growled lyrics, which mainly feature in the fast paced death metal sections, to quiet almost sinister whispering, tortured whimpers, distant screaming to the out of control raving that I mentioned before. Very impressive work.

This album isn't going to appeal to everyone; it really is quite out, no, way out in the extreme left field of doom. They really can't be compared to anyone other than Mr. Bungle at times, which sounds really strange for a doom-metal band, but it's the best association that I know of. Regardless, I really enjoy this truly unique album and therefore it is extremely highly recommended.
