The Bleeding : The Answerless Maze

'The Answerless Maze' was originally released in 1995 as a demo tape. Two years after the band split up, it was releleased by Impaled Productions, who's apparently gotten a rip-off reputation. In any case the label made it hard to get hold of the re-release, thus never giving it the chance other than to remain in obscurity. A shame since this is in my ears a classic amongst the über-heavy traditional doom bands.

While the 1996 promo was indeed extremely Black Sabbath oriented, this one has taken things a notch slower. In fact the pace and sound is very much similar to what made Reverend Bizarre so famous. Track two, 'The Witch Within You', is remarkably similar to 'Burn In Hell!' by the Finnish reverends. Being that they formed in 1995, the same year that this demo saw the light of day, I have to draw the inevitable conclusion that the same style was simultaneously developed in two separate parts of Europe.

Needless to say, this demo/EP is clearly the kind of music any Reverend Bizarre fans would be looking for. I'd even go as far as to state that these guys have at least the same amount of talent as their more famous doom brethren. I wonder if the tables would have been turned if Impaled Productions had done their job properly? It might just have been that The Bleeding ended been the big name in the style. After all they were a year earlier in getting a label deal. It's a sad destiny to remain this obscure while clearly standing out as one of the 90's traditional doom must-haves.
