Gargoyle : Reborn In Blasphemy (Demo)

Gargoyle's demo simply revels in replicating the style and imagery of their influences, on practically a negative budget.

Pop in an early Morbid Angel or Motörhead cassette, press play, and hold your finger on the spindle to slow it down. Now imagine the results with an added sprinkling of vintage Paul Chain. You won't be too far off - in style or sound quality - from what you'll hear early on from the 2016 demo from Gargoyle, an Italian quartet who proudly celebrate metal's elder gods with three tracks over fifteen bone-raw, down-and-dirty minutes.

Opening song 'Lord of the Tentaculars' rises from the swampy depths with the serpentine bulk of a Lovecraftian Great Old One, tremolo-picked guitar lines supporting priestly vocals loosely in the Paul Chain mould. Things settle into a blocky, chord-based affair, in which there is a bit more guitar harmony than the back-of-the-cave production wants to reveal. Overall, it's a fairly faithful first-gen Doom worship with tinges of Death metal vocals that call to mind late-80s David Vincent. 'The Highlander' is fairly in line with many of today's other throwback-traditional doom bands ā la Cardinals Folly, just in a more primeval, not-quite-solidified form.

For the most part, Gargoyle simply revel in replicating the style and imagery of their influences on practically a negative budget. For those out there keeping an ear open for who today can effectively take up the distinctively Italian-occult-doom torch, Gargoyle certainly aren't first in line, but they've thrown their hat in the ring with an appreciably true-to-the-book entry.
